According To Koenigsegg, Nobody Desires Electrified Hypercars
Several CEOs are sceptical of electric hypercars, and Christian von Koenigsegg is one of them. Rimac CEO Mate Rimac raised the issue last year when he noticed a drop in demand for the Never, and recently, Chevrolet confirmed that their electric supercar won’t be coming anytime soon.
In an interview with Top Gear, Christian von Koenigsegg said, “The market appetite for this level of all-electric car is extremely low.”
He added that “an electric vehicle is a bit more of a robot,” highlighting one of the key challenges automakers face as they develop electric vehicles—mimicking the feel of an internal combustion engine car that so many people enjoy.
“You want the pulsing, the pumping, the heat, the sounds, the gear changes, all these aspects that just make it come alive,” Koenigsegg told the publication, though he likes the responsiveness and smoothness of electric vehicles. Without an internal combustion engine, that presence and personality is gone.
But that’s not something he’s worried about right now. He told Top Gear that the company has completely sold out, so the next chance to buy a new Koenigsegg will be when it launches a new model, which is in 12 to 18 months. Then the company will reopen the order books, and it won’t be an electric model.
