BMW Will Start Testing Fleet Of Hydrogen-powered iX5 SUVs At The End Of Year - autojosh

BMW and Toyota already have a partnership in the field of hydrogen cars but are said to be looking to officially expand that collaboration soon.

Hydrogen in passenger cars remains a topic of discussion. Most car manufacturers do not believe in it, but exceptions such as Hyundai and Toyota continue to invest in it despite visible setbacks. BMW also wants to supply a hydrogen car, but will not develop that car entirely in-house. Instead, it is calling on Toyota for help, with whom it already collaborated in another area to make the Toyota Supra/BMW Z4 duo possible. The hydrogen collaboration between BMW and Toyota is also not new in itself because the small-scale production of the BMW iX5 Hydrogen was also created with the help of Toyota. BMW wants to put a similar car, a completely new iX5 Hydrogen, into series production sometime in the coming years. Toyota will again supply the fuel cell, while BMW will pick things like electric motors from its warehouses. After all, a car with a fuel cell is in fact ‘just’ an EV, except that the power is generated from hydrogen and therefore not from a large battery.

According to Nikkei Asia, the partnership will be expanded in the coming years. Toyota will supply BMW with even more components for the hydrogen fleet, including hydrogen tanks. BMW and Toyota will announce the partnership on September 5 according to Nikkei.
