According to Automotive News, China’s BYD is enquiring about Maserati after BYD Executive Vice President Stella Li told reporters that companies like Maserati are “very interesting”. Maserati Chief Operating Officer Santo Ficili has reaffirmed to a sceptical audience that Maserati is “not for sale”, a point Stellantis has been making for a long time. However, it makes sense to take such a step. Jeep, Ram, and Dodge are given priority in the new Stellantis return plan. If Stellantis were to let go of the struggling Maserati, it would have one fewer brand to revitalise and some extra cash on the ledger. However, there are other possible advantages.

With Maserati, BYD Could Win Big

BYD (Build Your Dreams) is experiencing a drop in sales and profits in its home market due to growing competition from other Chinese automakers. Tariffs are also having an effect on profitability in Europe. BYD might get access to European manufacturing, lowering production costs and avoiding taxes, if it were to acquire Maserati or at the very least establish a partnership with the company. With decades of history to draw from, Maserati would also be a notable feather in the cap of any Chinese corporation.

The benefits appear favourable for Maserati as well. The Italian company might have access to cutting-edge EV technology, and BYD would undoubtedly make significant investments in new goods. It’s also important to note that BYD has been considering a Formula One entry for a while. While competing in the highest level of combustion-powered single-seater motorsport may seem odd for an EV-focused company that primarily produces family cars, utilising the Maserati trident in F1 could be very promising. But don’t expect Maserati to be acquired by the Chinese anytime soon.

It’s unlikely that BYD will purchase Maserati. For now

Stefan Bratzel, founder and director of the independent research institute Center of Automotive Management, told AutoNews that a BYD takeover of Maserati isn’t impossible but seems unlikely at present. Others suggest that such a move could pose a financial risk for BYD, especially as Stellantis plans new Maserati models. This indicates the Italian brand is unlikely to be sold soon. Nevertheless, analysts believe that if traditional automakers consider selling some brands, many Chinese automakers, including BYD, would be interested. As these newer brands focus on improving quality and technology rather than just undercutting prices, the prospect of Chinese brands acquiring European companies with diminished prestige becomes increasingly plausible.
