Chevrolet To Begin Production Of The Equinox EV Soon In Mexico

The 2024 Chevrolet Equinox EV is set to roll off the production line at General Motors’ Ramos Arizpe plant in Mexico during the first quarter of the coming year, according to GM Mexico CEO Francisco Garza. This eagerly anticipated compact electric SUV will become the second GM electric vehicle to be assembled in Mexico, following the Blazer EV.
Garza affirmed, “For Chevrolet, we confirm the arrival of the Blazer EV, which is produced in Ramos Arizpe, the first electric vehicle manufacturing site in our country. The Chevrolet Equinox EV will also arrive in Mexico, and it will begin production during the first quarter of next year.”
Currently, the Ramos Arizpe plant churns out 200 Blazer EVs daily in two shifts. However, when Equinox EV production commences early next year, the output of electric vehicles is expected to see a significant increase.
Workers at the Ramos Arizpe site, previously dedicated to gas-powered Equinox production, have already begun training for the assembly of Equinox EV SUVs. This marks a strategic move by GM, aligning with the global trend toward electric vehicles.
Despite the production delay from its initial projection in Q4 2023, GM has reassured consumers that this will not impact the Equinox EV’s US launch timing. The launch model is still scheduled for early 2024, with subsequent variants released throughout the 2024 calendar year.
One critical aspect of this launch is the eligibility of the Equinox EV for the $7,500 federal tax credit under the updated IRA guidance for 2024. While GM couldn’t provide a definitive answer, they expressed confidence due to their substantial investments in the US and efforts to enhance supply chain resilience.
All Chevrolet Equinox EV models will feature the same battery pack, although its storage capacity remains undisclosed by GM. Nevertheless, it’s known to provide a manufacturer-estimated driving range of 513 km for single-motor FWD variants, an improvement of 31 km compared to the previous estimate.
As of October, GM reported a staggering 200,000 reservations for the Equinox EV.
