Chinese Smartphone Maker, Xiaomi, Unveils SU7 Electric Sedan, Aims to Be Among Top 5 Automakers
Beijing-based brand chinese smartphone maker, Xiaomi, unveils the SU7 sedan, its first and long-awaited electric car.
Xiaomi, which aims to be among top 5 automakers, describes the SU7 as a “full-size high-performance eco-technology sedan”.
Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi has announced it was aiming to “become one of the top five global automakers” within 15 to 20 years. The Beijing-based brand made this known last week at the unveiling of its long-awaited Xiaomi SU7, its first electric vehicle.
Due on sale globally this year, the SU7 (SU stands for Speed Ultra) has already arrived in Xiaomi’s Beijing store and is scheduled to begin mass production in the first half this year.
Xiaomi describes the SU7 as a “full-size high-performance eco-technology sedan” and claims it will reach 100km/h (0-60 mph) in 2.8 seconds.
Lei Jun, Chief Executive of Xiaomi, touted the highly anticipated model as having “super electric motor” technology capable of delivering acceleration speeds faster than Tesla cars and Porsche’s EVs.

In addition, it boasts a world-leading autonomous driving technology that features a lidar, backed up by 11 high-definition cameras, three millimetre-wave radars and twelve ultrasonic radars.
Inside, the Smart Cabin boasts of five screens, including a 16.1-inch 3K central console, two iPad-like screens for rear passengers and a huge a 56-inch HUD head-up display. It will also be compatible with Apple’s iPhone, iPad, CarPlay and AirPlay.
The SU7 will be powered by Xiaomi’s own in-house developed electric motors, named the V6, V6s and V8s. V8s, the most powerful dubbed the ‘HyperEngine’ produces up to 670bhp and 468 lb ft.
Xiaomi claims its battery with a maximum capacity of 150kWh will provide a “theoretical” range of up to 1200km, although there will be variants with driving range of 628 kilometers to 800 kilometers, according to report.
