Alphanumeric codes and colors on Nigerian Vehicle Registration (Number) plates and their meaning.

Number plate is a vehicle identification mark and current one in use were introduced in 2011.

In Nigeria, license plates generally have white background while the color of the numbers varies by vehicle type.





Details on number plates includes the state name and slogan as well as the Local Government Area where the vehicle is registered.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) is charged with the responsibility of designing and producing Vehicle Registration Plates (License or Number Plate) in Nigeria. Number plate is a vehicle identification mark and the current one in use were introduced in 2011.

In Nigeria, license plates generally have white background while the color of the numbers varies by vehicle type. The numbers is imprinted in blue for Private vehicles while Commercial vehicles use red.

Also, Government vehicles use number plates with green lettering, Armed forces/paramilitary use black lettering while Diplomatic plates have purple and green background with white lettering.

Plate format

The upper left-hand corner carries the flag of Nigeria or the national coat of arms while the “Federal Republic of Nigeria” is written at the bottom. The state name and slogan is displayed at the top centre of the plate.





The unique plate combination is in the format ABC-123DE, with the first three letters (ABC) indicating the Local Government Area (LGA) or Licensing Office where the vehicle is registered. The next three digits are numbers while the last two letters are used for numbering.

In Diplomatic Plates, the first two/three digits represent the country the owner of the car represents, followed by two letters and numbers. Instead of the name of the state, they read CORPS DIPLOMATIQUE.
