Dangerous Cruise : Watch as FRSC personnel ‘without life jackets on’ ferry their patrol car across a river.

The dangerous cruise across the river is likely the only mode of transportation to connect to other towns.

Crossing points used by motorists mostly due to poor state of the roads during the peak of the rainy season.

As of 2023, commercial buses were charged N3k, while private cars and passengers were charged N2,500 and N200 respectively.

Watch as personnel of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) ‘without Life Jackets on’ attempt to use an unstable boat to transport their patrol vehicle across a body of water.

Founded in 1988, the FRSC’s statutory functions includes making the highways safe for motorists and other road users as well as enforcement of road traffic laws.

The dangerous cruise across the river is likely the only mode of transportation to connect to other towns. These crossings are used by motorists due to poor state of the roads and lack of linkages.

Ferries form a part of the public transport systems of many waterside areas in Nigeria, especially in Lagos State and Benue State – the latter, where transportation of vehicles across the Buruku river is very common.

“We are living in a risky country, and the leadership of the country is also very risky. So I don’t mind taking the risk because I don’t have an option. They just showed me this route, and I’ve been taking it ever since,” a motorist told this FIJ reporter.

An FIJ report in June 2023 revealed that over 37 ferries carries at least eight cars each across the Buruku river per day. Then, commercial buses were charged N3,000 per trip. Private cars were charged N2,500 while passengers pay N200.
