E-Fuels And Hydrogen Could Have A Future In Ferrari Models
Ferrari boss Benedetto Vigna believes environmentally friendly e-fuels and hydrogen propulsion could have a future in Ferrari models and wants to use motorsport to develop both technologies.
He believes that carbon-neutral fuel “will become more and more a reality.” He also added, “We are working with partners for 2026 on carbon-neutral fuel in Formula 1 [as part of the new technical rules] and usually technologies start on the track and migrate to the road. “We believe there is still a way forward for SUS cars, and this will be supported by the development of carbon-neutral fuel.”
Vinja makes the comments as Ferrari prepares to unveil the long-awaited successor to the LaFerrari hypercar, which is expected to use a similar hybrid powertrain to the 296 and SF90 supercars but with power boosted to unprecedented levels.
It is not yet known what type of engine the car uses—V6, V8 or V12—but announcements suggest that it is intended to run on e-fuels.
Codenamed F250, it is now undergoing road testing and is expected to be launched next year.
Asked about Ferrari’s interest in hydrogen technology, Vinja said the company is investigating the type of fuel: “We don’t see it before 2030. I also believe that the racing space can always be the first place to adopt technologies.” But he added that “hydrogen could be a good option for the future”.
Vinja has previously suggested that Ferrari could use sustainable fuels as a means of keeping combustion engine cars on sale beyond 2035, and the European Commission has proposed allowing SUS engines to remain on sale as long as they can run on e-fuel.
“SUS still has a lot to do,” he said last year, explaining that the development and adoption of e-fuels are moving faster than expected.
