BMW Kills Any Hope Of A New 8 Series

With second-generation 8 Series production ending in April 2026 and no clear successor planned, a Neue Klasse version remains unlikely.

In a recent discussion with Automotive News, a BMW executive indicated that incorporating the flagship coupe into the Neue Klasse architecture is currently unfeasible. This decision leaves the manufacturer without a primary grand tourer for the foreseeable future, as plans to delegate this role to the relaunched Alpina brand were reportedly abandoned.

Initially unveiled at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este in May 2026 and subsequently showcased during Monterey Car Week, the concept vehicle appears to address the unresolved question regarding the successor to the 8 Series.

BMW’s 8 Series cannot transition to the Neue Klasse platform because the underlying CLAR architecture lacks the necessary electrical and software capabilities. Re-engineering this legacy platform for a low-volume grand tourer is not commercially viable, a challenge also affecting the potential XM successor.

The Vision BMW Alpina, with its classic shark-nose design, V8 engine, and luxury interior, serves as a potential grand tourer successor to the 8-series. While currently a design study, it could signal Alpina’s shift into the ultra-luxury segment. Following its 2026 restructuring, Alpina’s upcoming V8-powered 7 Series may pave the way for a production version of this GT concept as the brand’s new flagship.
