The The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has launched the second phase of its special intervention patrol, code-named Operation Guduma, targeting motorists using fake, covered, defaced and obsolete vehicle number plates across Nigeria.

Approved by Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed, the five-day operation will run from Monday, November 2, to Friday, November 6, 2026, and cover selected states as part of renewed efforts to strengthen road safety enforcement and address security concerns associated with fraudulent vehicle registration plates.

According to the FRSC, Operation Guduma Phase Two builds on the first phase conducted in May 2026, which resulted in 1,691 arrests across 11 states. The arrests included 1,003 motorists for number plate-related offences, 683 for overloading and mixed-loading, and five individuals for using fake diplomatic number plates.

The renewed crackdown follows concerns raised by the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) over the increasing use of fake vehicle registration plates, including covered, defaced, obsolete and counterfeit diplomatic plates.

“The Corps is concerned that vehicles operating with unidentifiable or fraudulent registration plates create opportunities for criminal elements to evade identification, compromise security surveillance and frustrate investigations,” FRSC said in a statement.

Beyond targeting number plate violations, the FRSC says the operation will also focus on maintaining free-flowing traffic and smoother movement for motorists along designated routes, providing emergency rescue services and promptly clearing road obstructions.

Speaking on the exercise, Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed reaffirmed the FRSC’s determination to tackle practices that threaten public safety and national security. He warned that the use of fake, concealed, defaced or obsolete number plates would no longer be treated as a minor traffic offence.

He urged motorists to ensure their vehicle registration plates are genuine, valid, clearly visible and properly displayed. He also directed officers to conduct the operation professionally, with discipline and respect for citizens’ rights.

“With Operation Guduma Phase Two, the FRSC is sending a clear message that Nigerian roads must remain safe, vehicles must be identifiable, and no individual should exploit registration irregularities to evade lawful accountability.”
