Kenya To Ban Importation Of Second-hand Buses, Trucks From July, To Increase Safety On The Roads

Kenya to ban the importation of second-hand passenger mini-buses and large buses, trucks from July 1st, 2022.

The move follows the implementation of new standards that is aimed at increasing safety on the roads.

Kenya said it will also support local car assemblers in the country, who produce over 5,000 vehicles annually.

Kenya will continue to allow the importation of all other categories of used vehicles, provided they are not older than eight years.

Kenya will stop the importation of used passenger mini-buses and large buses, single articulated and bi-articulated and double-decker buses from July 1, the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) said in a statement on Thursday.

“Kebs wishes to inform all stakeholders and the general public that effective July 1, 2022, all used passenger minibuses, midibuses, large buses, single articulated and bi-articulated business and double-decker buses shall not be allowed for importation into the country”

The body said the move follows the implementation of new standards is aimed at increasing safety on the roads as well to support local car assemblers in the country, who produce over 5,000 vehicles annually.

Kenya also banned the importation of rigid trucks that weighs between 3.5 tonnes and 30 tonnes.

“All used rigid trucks with Gross Value Mass (GVM) equal to or greater than 3.5 tonnes and up to and including 30 tonnes shall not be allowed for importation into the country.”

The statement noted that tractor heads and prime movers not older than three years since the time of first registration will be allowed into Kenya until June 2023, when they will be banned.

(KEBS), however, said that the East African nation will continue to allow the importation of all other categories of used vehicles, including Sedans and SUVs, provided they are not older than eight years from the year of first registration.
