Lagos BRT system has moved over 530 million passengers since its launch 17 years ago on 17th of March 2008.

Initiative to build the Lagos BRT system was initiated by the government of the previous governor, Bola Tinubu.

First phase goes from Mile 12 to CMS while the second phase extends from Mile 12 to Ikorodu.

LAMATA announced it is expecting the arrival of 500 CNG buses and 50 EVs to boost the public transport fleet.

The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) is celebrating seventeen (17) years since the first phase of the Lagos Bus Rapid Transit System, also known as Lagos BRT, was officially launched for passenger operations.

Since the start of operation on 17th of March 2008, the bus rapid transit system in Lagos State currently operated by multiple bus operating companies, has moved over 530 million passengers.

“17 years ago, the first successful Bus Rapid transit (BRT) system in Sub-Saharan Africa, was launched in Lagos Nigeria,” LAMATA wrote on its social media platforms.

“To date the BRT on Mile 12 to CMS, later extend to Ikorodu and TBS has moved over 530 million passengers”.

The initiative to build the Lagos BRT system was initiated by the government of the previous governor, Bola Tinubu (now president of Nigeria), to solve the major transportation problems in Lagos.

The first phase of the Lagos BRT system launched in March 2008 goes from Mile 12 to CMS through Ikorodu Road and Funsho Williams Avenue.

The second phase, commissioned in November 2015, extends from Mile 12 to Ikorodu while Oshodi-Abule-Egba route was commissioned in August 2020.

Earlier this month, LAMATA announced it is expecting the arrival of new 500 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses and 50 electric vehicles by the last quarter of the year to boost the public transport fleet.
