Lagos To Observe Car-free Day On Sunday Sept. 22nd 2024 - Aim To Encourage Cycling, Walking - autojosh

Residents in Lagos to observe car-free day on Sunday September 22nd 2024, Lagos State Government has announced.

Initiative aimed to encourage road users to set aside their cars for a day and embrace Non-Motorised Transport such as cycling and walking.

In cities around the world, some of the roads will be closed/transformed into temporary spaces for play and social gatherings.

In Lagos, participants will gather at the Ahmadu Bello Way venue for cycling, cycling competitions, skating, stretches and dance.





The Lagos State Government, in collaboration with the Lagos Urban Development Initiative (LUDI) and other Stakeholders, will observe the annual ‘Car Free Day’ in Lagos on Sunday, 22nd September, 2024.

The initiative is designed to encourage road users and motorists to set aside their cars for a day and embrace Non-Motorised Transport (NMT) such as cycling and walking.

The Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi explained that the primary aim of the initiative is to raise awareness about the benefits of Non-Motorised Transport.

“According to the World Health Organization (WHO), physical inactivity is the fourth leading risk factor for global mortality, accounting for 6% of global deaths,” a statement from the Transport Ministry said.

“Increasing physical activity and reducing sedentary behaviours are essential steps in promoting public health, as people of all ages and abilities can benefit from a more active lifestyle.”

In cities around the world, streets will be closed on Sunday September 22nd to mark World Car Free Day. Some of the roads will be transformed into temporary spaces for play and social gatherings.





In Lagos, hundreds of participants are expected to gather at the Ahmadu Bello Way venue for exciting activities such as cycling, cycling training, cycling competitions, skating, stretches, music and dance.
