LAMATA to bolster Red Line fleet with three train sets comprising of 24 new coaches by Q3 2026

The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) has announced the expected delivery of three train sets – comprising of eight coaches each – to boosts the operations of the Lagos Rail Mass Transit (LRMT) by third quarter of 2026.
The new acquisition will strengthen the existing fleet and improve passenger experience across the Red Line corridor, according to a statement by Head Corporate Communication Kolawole Ojelabi.
Ojelabi said this while acknowledging the recent reports and social media footage highlighting passenger discomfort on the Oyingbo-Agbado train service due to technical issues affecting the air conditioning system.
“We sincerely apologize to our valued commuters for the heat and inconvenience experienced during their journey.”
“As part of our long-term strategy to enhance capacity, comfort, and service reliability, LAMATA is pleased to announce the expected delivery and operationalization of additional rolling stock by third quarter of 2026.”
“In the immediate term, our technical and engineering teams have been deployed to diagnose and resolve the root cause of the cooling system failure. Restoration works are ongoing, and efforts are being intensified to return the affected coaches to optimal operating condition as swiftly as possible.”

Operated by LAMATA, the Lagos Rail Mass Transit (LRMT) Red Line, which turned one last October, stretches 27-kilometer between Agbado in Ogun State and Oyingbo in Lagos State.
