J.D. Power’s latest Initial Quality Study shows Porsche surpassing Lexus for the top spot, leading the premium and overall market with 138 PP100. Genesis is second with 151, Ford leads mass-market brands at 152, and Lexus and Nissan tie for fourth with 156. The industry average improved to 175 PP100 from 192, the biggest year-over-year gain in nearly 30 years. Connectivity issues with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto still cause problems, as complexity increases the chance of issues, according to Frank Hanley of J.D. Power.

Furthermore, consumers expressed concerns regarding the distracting nature of modern infotainment screens. Forty-six percent of respondents identified digital displays and touchscreens as sources of distracted driving, while 18 percent attributed such distractions to driver assistance alerts. In contrast, improvements in the design, accessibility, and capacity of cupholders served as the most significant factor contributing to the overall rise in initial quality scores this year.

Here are the top 11 car brands that ranked above average in the JD Power 2026 U.S. Initial Quality Study:

  1. Porsche — 138 PP100
  2. Genesis — 151 PP100

A detailed analysis of the study highlights top-performing models, notably the Porsche 911, which achieved the highest initial quality rating of any vehicle with 110 PP100, maintaining its top ranking from the previous year.

BMW secured the highest number of model awards, with six vehicles leading their respective segments: the 2 Series, 5 Series, 8 Series, X2, X6, and X7. Hyundai followed closely with five top-ranked models: the Santa Cruz, Sonata, Venue, Carnival, and K4.

General Motors attained four top rankings with the Cadillac CT4, Cadillac XT5, Chevrolet Blazer, and Chevrolet Tahoe, while Ford contributed three leading models: the F-150, Mustang, and Super Duty.

The J.D. Power Initial Quality Study utilizes a comprehensive survey comprising 227 questions across 10 distinct vehicle categories, including infotainment, controls and displays, exterior, driving assistance, interior, seating, powertrain, driving experience, climate systems, and other unspecified areas.

By integrating these survey results with pertinent repair data, J.D. Power calculates a definitive score expressed as problems per 100 vehicles (PP100), where a lower numerical value signifies superior initial quality.

This year’s analysis incorporated feedback from 78,514 vehicle owners and lessees, specifically assessing issues encountered within the first 90 days of ownership.
