Mercedes-Benz German car Tuning specialists, Carlsson, stunned the world back in 2014 with the unveiling of an S-Class-based ‘Carlsson CS50 Versailles Edition‘ at the Geneva International Motor Show.
The Carlsson CS50 Versailles, based on the then new Mercedes-Benz S-Class, was specifically developed for ultra-wealthy in China as well as the new ‘royalty’ of the Middle Kingdom.
Carlsson claims that the Carlsson CS50 Versailles was inspired by the famed Palace of Versailles in France. The bodywork of the Carlsson Versailles was adorned with more than 1,000 sheets of wafer-thin gold leaf, a process that took over 200 man-hours.
Other exterior elements that received the lustrous gold finish includes the radiator grille, door handles, and grille inserts in the front bumper.
The gold finish continues inside, with the plush cabin receiving around $16,000 worth of gold trims, with the buttons, knobs, steering wheel, cup holders, speaker grilles and infotainment controls, being the main beneficiaries.
Ultra-Wealthy clients hoping to make their Carlsson CS50 Versailles more unique were also offered large HD screens, a REVOX sound system, humidor, and bespoke business facilities such as a Wi-Fi Hotspot.
Back then, the German tuning company claimed that more than 10 of the planned 25 limited-edition Carlsson CS50 Versailles’ were already been allocated to existing Carlsson clients even before its official unveiling.
