Mercedes Cancel Plan To Build Electric Mercedes-Maybach With Sedan SUV Body Style
Mercedes cancel plan to build production version of its Vision Mercedes-Maybach Ultimate Luxury aimed at Chinese market.
The project was canceled due to high development costs. The decision to stop the project was made few months ago.
First unveiled at “Auto China 2018” in Beijing in 2018, the design of the Crossover combines the body styles luxury sedan and an SUV.
The production version of the China-only luxury car was expected to create a new segment dubbed Sport Utility Sedan (SUS).
Mercedes-Benz has canceled the development of the its Vision Mercedes-Maybach Ultimate Luxury, an electric vehicle that combines the body styles of luxury sedan and an SUV, and aimed at the lucrative Chinese market.
Three insiders first told German newspaper, Handelsblatt, that the move was due to high development costs and that the decision to stop the project was made by Mercedes executives a few months ago.
When Handelsblatt reached out to Mercedes, the automaker admitted in a statement that the luxury EV was too expensive to build, adding that it already has plenty of electric cars on sale in China to cover all the important segments.
“In order to reduce complexity, we have therefore decided not to continue the project of a China-specific additional vehicle based on the EVA2 architecture for the time being.”

First unveiled at “Auto China 2018” in Beijing in 2018, the design of the Mercedes-Maybach Crossover combines the body styles an exclusive high-end sedan and an SUV, to create a new segment dubbed Sport Utility Sedan (SUS).
At the time of reveal in 2018, Gorden Wagener, Chief Design Officer at Mercedes‑Benz Group AG, said :
“The Vision Mercedes-Maybach Ultimate Luxury is a totally new archetype of a kind never seen before.”
“Our concept combines the DNA of an SUV with that of a saloon to produce an ultra-modern SUV of three-box design,” says Wagener.
“With sensuality and pure sophistication, we have created a timeless vehicle that underscores the position of Mercedes-Maybach as the ultimate luxury brand,” Wagener said.
The Vision Mercedes-Maybach Ultimate Luxury was initially planned to go on sale in China, the world’s largest automotive market, by 2025.
