A Ferrari F2003-GA Formula One car with chassis number 229 driven by seven-time F1 champion Michael Schumacher en route to his sixth title in 2003 was sold for $14.8 million at an RM Sotheby’s auction in Geneva on Wednesday.

Chassis 229, the most successful of the six F2003-GAs that were built, helped Schumacher claim his sixth World Championship title. Schumacher scored five of his six wins in the Ferrari during his World Championship-winning 2003.

“From World Champion to world record holder, the most successful Ferrari F2003-GA car is now the most valuable modern F1 car in history.

“The car Michael Schumacher drove en route to his sixth title has sold for CHF14,630,000 ($14,873,327 USD) at Sotheby’s Luxury Week in Geneva,” RM Sotheby’s said on Twitter.

Another Schumacher-driven Ferrari, a F2001, sold for $7.5 million by Sotheby’s in New York in 2017, while a Ferrari F300 Chassis 127 driven to four victories by Schumacher during the 1998 campaign sold for more than $6 Million.

While Schumacher’s Ferrari F2003-GA car is now the most valuable modern era F1 car, a 1954 Mercedes W196R F1 car remains the most expensive F1 car ever to be publicly auctioned.

At $29,650,095 (₦12.2billion), this 1954 Mercedes W196R sold by Bonhams at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in 2013 remains the most expensive F1 car ever to be publicly auctioned.

The Mercedes W196R, which took Juan Manuel Fangio to his five Formula 1 titles, is the symbol of the Silver Arrows’ first successful foray into F1.
