Photo : A Driver Stand Next To A Ford V8 Ambulance In Lagos In 1940
Picture shared shows a driver stand next to a Ford V8 ambulance parked in front of Nigerian Medical and Health Services building.
It has three bars runing on the side of the bonnet and a spare tyre on the passenger’s side, a design common to cars made between 1930s and 40s.
Prewar ambulance designed to transport patients to the nearest medical facility, unlike today’s ambulances with Mobile Intensive Care Unit.
Picture gotten from “E.H. Duckworth Photograph Collection”, which contains 12,000+ photographs documenting Nigeria 1930-1970.
A picture reportedly taken in 1940 by British expatriate officer, E.H. Duckworth (1894 – 1972) shows a driver standing next to a Ford V8 ambulance (license A673) parked in front of the entrance to the Nigerian Medical and Health Services building.
An excerpt from an advert by Joe Allen & Company Limited reads :
“This ambulance is attached to the Lagos Police Headquarters and is ready day and night for immediate use.
“Such service calls for a car that has supreme riding comfort, an engine that gives power with economy and is absolutely reliable.
“If you demand those qualities in a car for private or other purposes let your choice be the FORD V8”.
The Ford V8 ambulance shown has three bars running on the side of the hood (bonnet) and a spare tyre on the passenger’s side — a design common to cars made between 1930s and 40s.
This prewar ambulance was designed to transport patients to the nearest medical facility, unlike today’s ultra-modern ambulances with Mobile Intensive Care Unit (MICU), which provides on-site trauma and surgical services.
The picture of the Ford V8 ambulance reportedly taken in Lagos in 1940 was gotten from “E.H. Duckworth Photograph Collection”, which contains well over 12,000 photographs documenting Nigeria 1930-1970.
