Rolls-Royce Phantom Nameplate Turns 100 In 2025

Rolls-Royce Phantom – a nameplate reserved for the flagship model – will celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2025.

Phantom name began with the “New Phantom” model in 1925, which succeeded the 40/50 H.P., universally known as the Silver Ghost. 

Today, the latest-generation Rolls-Royce Phantom VIII is the ultimate blank canvas for Bespoke commissions.

Recent commissions include the Phantom Syntopia, Phantom Goldfinger and the Phantom Extended ‘Year of the Dragon’.

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars’ Phantom will celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2025. The now iconic Phantom nameplate has been reserved for the flagship model since its launch in 1925.

The Phantom name began with the “New Phantom” model (also called 40/50 HP Phantom I) in 1925, which succeeded the 40/50 H.P., universally known as the Silver Ghost, launched in 1906.

While there is no specific documentary evidence, Rolls-Royce assume that the Phantom name was coined by the then-Commercial Managing Director, Claude Johnson – who recognised that naming the company’s products could act as a sales device.

1972 Rolls-Royce Phantom VI Limousine

Phantom VII

The Phantom name had graced the very best of Rolls-Royce Cars for some 14 years until production stopped in 1939 when World War II broke out. Rolls-Royce resurrected the name in 1950 with the Phantom IV. Phantom V was limited to just 18 and built exclusively for royalty and world leaders.

The latest-generation Phantom VIII, launched in 2017, replaced the Phantom VII. The latter over its 13-year lifespan, cemented Rolls-Royce Motor Cars as the “world’s pre-eminent super luxury motor manufacturer”.

Today, Phantom VIII is the ultimate blank canvas for Bespoke commissions. Recent one-off commissions include the Phantom Syntopia, Phantom Goldfinger, Phantom Extended ‘Year of the Dragon’ and the Phantom Scintilla.
