Rumor: BMW 6-Series Set To Make A Comeback As The 8-Series Will Be Axed
We descend for a moment into the deeper depths of the rumor mill, where most of it is unfounded and the rest is at least uncertain. Here we are told that BMW will eventually reintroduce the 6-series at the expense of the 8-series. That might make more sense than it seems.
Do you remember? The current BMW 8 Series appeared in 2018 and replaced the 6 Series. The 8-series is also available as a coupe, convertible and four-door Gran Coupé, but the name ‘8-series’ allowed BMW to position it higher in the market and still earn more money with a fairly equivalent product. Smart, but if we can believe reports, the current 8-series will be retired after just one generation, just like its illustrious predecessor. BMW is said to be planning to bring back the 6-series. Then we are not talking about the 6-series GT, that strange but secretly nice five-door liftback, but about a real coupe and convertible.
The rumors come from suppliers, who must, of course, be prepared for such a decision and call for the new BMW 6 Series to be launched in 2026. This fits in nicely with the end of the life of the 8 series, which can also be expected around that time. While this move may seem capricious on BMW’s part at first glance, it’s less strange than you might think. A few years ago, competitor Mercedes had three different four-seater coupes and convertibles but has now reduced that to one (CLE). Perhaps BMW has also come to the conclusion that the market for these types of cars is too small to supply both a 4-series coupe and convertible and an 8-series coupe and convertible, and the compromise is sought in the return of a 6-series that replaces both. A car like the 4-series could still live on as an EV, with or without rear doors (i4). A 2-series or M2 coupe may hold its own as a sporty joker, but no mention is made of that.
