Sales of The Lexus IS More Than Doubled While The ES Collapsed
Lexus set a record for June sales in the U.S. with 29,166 vehicles sold—a 3.9% year-over-year increase—driven largely by SUVs and electrified models. While monthly electrified sales rose 11.7%, quarterly results show an overall 7.5% decline in total deliveries compared to last year. Despite the broader success, the brand faces sharp volatility, highlighted by a staggering 89.3% sales collapse for the ES sedan. The biggest surprise in the June report came from the sedan range. Sales of the Lexus IS more than doubled, climbing 120.5% to 2,888 units, while the flagship LC grand tourer surged 121.5% to 144 deliveries. Although modest in volume, the increase is a swan song, as the LC is scheduled to leave production in August 2026.
By contrast, no current Lexus model suffered a bigger decline than the ES. Sales plunged 89.3% to just 331 units. Lexus has not explained the sharp decline, but it comes after the unveiling of the redesigned ES, which has attracted criticism over its exterior styling and minimalist interior, particularly the lack of physical buttons.
These losses were effectively mitigated by the SUV lineup, led by the RX, which saw a 21.3% increase to 9,836 units, followed by the TX, which rose 12.1% to 5,301 units. Furthermore, the all-electric RZ experienced a 31.6% growth in sales.
The June results clearly delineate the strategic trajectory for Lexus. SUVs maintain their dominance in the market, while electrified models are increasingly integral to the brand’s portfolio. Notably, the entry-level luxury sedan, the IS, continues to lead the passenger car segment, demonstrating sustained demand for sedans. However, the significant decline in ES sales suggests that consumers may be hesitant toward future sedan models if the manufacturer continues its current design direction. With the imminent discontinuation of the LC, it is evident that Lexus is prioritizing an electrified, SUV-centric future.
