Six Dead In Lagos Boat Mishap

The mishap comes two weeks after LASWA said Lagos recorded zero boat accident since the beginning of the year.
LASWA has issued warnings to all ferry operators and passengers against violating the rule of ‘No Night travelling’ on the waterways.
Six people have been confirmed dead after a 20-passenger boat capsized at Owode Ibeshe, in Ikorodu Local Government Area of the state on Friday night.
Five persons were initially reported dead and others missing, including the captain of the boat.
Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, assisted the State Waterways Authority, LASWA, in the rescue operations saved 16 passengers.
The mishap comes two weeks after LASWA said Lagos recorded zero boat accident since the beginning of the year; which was a new record in water transportation safety in Lagos State.
According to reports, the boat left the Ebute Ero Jetty around 8 pm; two hours above Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) approved traveling hour, before capsizing.

General Manager of LASWA, Oluwadamilola Emmanuel; who confirmed the incident, said that the LASWA rescue party, included local boat operators, marine police, and LASEMA among others.
Following a boat accident, the State Inland Waterways Authority, LASWA has issued warnings to all ferry operators and passengers against violating laid down rule of ‘No Night travelling’ on the waterways.
LASWA, while urging passengers to stop waterways night journeys, said any passenger found onboard boats at night will be prosecuted.
