Stellantis Begins Phasing Out Diesel Engines From Their Commercial Vehicles
The Stellantis Group has officially announced that it will no longer accept orders for light commercial vehicles with diesel engines. The last examples of these diesel-powered models will be delivered early next year.
With the new CO2 emission limits coming into force next year, car manufacturers are looking for the best solutions for their fleets to avoid having to pay heavy fines. Abolishing diesel engines is one of those solutions, even if this type of drive remains one of the most accepted in the cargo vehicle segment, writes.
We remind you that Dacia gave up diesel engines forever with the end of the life of the second-generation Duster. Toyota took this step long ago and replaced its famous diesels with hybrid systems, which are equally economical and perform similarly. However, against that trend, the Volkswagen Group is still resisting the pressure and continues to sell cars equipped with the well-known TDI diesel, even if it is preparing to phase them out in the coming years.
However, what is unquestionable in the Stellantis group is that diesel engines will disappear from the offer of commercial vehicles. The multinational group has announced that it will stop accepting orders for commercial models powered by the remaining diesel engines starting this fall.
Thus, models such as Peugeot Rifter, Citroen Berlingo and Opel Combo will be available only with petrol or electric engines. Cargo versions will no longer be offered with diesel engines, although the decision on these models remains in doubt.
According to information published in the French media, Stellantis will stop supplying commercial vehicles with diesel engines after January 1, 2025. Currently, the above models are available with a 1.5 BlueHDI diesel engine in two power options: 100 and 130 horsepower.
