Tanzanian president Samia Suluhu Hassan has reduced her 30-car convoy to just 3 vehicles and ordered government officials to travel in a single bus during official trips, amid shortages caused by the war in the Middle East.

Speaking at a swearing-in of newly appointed leaders in Dodoma, Hassan said only her core convoy, including her escort, police, and a backup vehicle, would remain in the official motorcade.

“We are starting to reduce fuel consumption, and I am beginning with my office. Whenever I travel, senior officials follow behind me in their own cars,” Ms Hassan said.

“From now on, wherever I go, all officials will travel together in one bus… to cut fuel consumption,” Hassan added.

Ms Hassan’s announcement comes amid global oil shortage and price surge due to the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz by Iran, through which roughly a fifth of the world’s oil and gas typically flows.
