The Chevy Corvette ZR1 Is Barely Faster Than The Hybrid E-Ray Version

The ridiculously powerful Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 was introduced back in July as the top model of the Corvette lineup. No mention was made of acceleration times at the time, but that changes today. Fasten your seatbelts!

The Chevrolet Corvette ZR1’s 5.5-litre V8 produces 1,079 hp (1,064 hp in the US) and has a torque of 1,123 Nm. We undoubtedly no longer need to explain that this is the fastest production Corvette ever, which is already underlined by the previously released top speed of 346 km/h. That turns out to be a gross underestimation because Chevrolet now mentions a top speed of no less than 375 km/h.

The sprint time from 0 to 100 km/h is and remains unknown because, of course, the Americans calculate everything in ‘freedom units’. The sprint from 0 to 60 miles per hour—0 to 96 km/h—is however rattled off by the ZR1 in 2.3 seconds, provided it is equipped with the so-called ZTK Package. This includes aerodynamic interventions (large rear wing) and sticky tires and yields a gain of 0.2 seconds. A ZR1 without ZTK is actually somewhat faster at the top of the spectrum, and at the end of the quarter mile, it drives 152 instead of 150 miles per hour (245 instead of 241 km/h).

With times like these, those last 4 km/h won’t make a difference either, so feel free to read that 0-60 time as a 0-100 time. With a 0-60 time of 2.3 seconds, the ZR1 with ZTK nestles among the greats of the earth. A Ferrari SF90 formally needs 2.5 seconds, and a 911 Turbo S 2.6. A Tesla Model S Plaid is even faster on paper with 1.99 seconds; Tesla states 2.1 seconds for that in Europe.

Hybrid

As impressive as it is, the ZR1 was essentially a necessity. The hybrid Chevrolet Corvette E-Ray can blast from 0 to 60 mph in 2.5 seconds thanks in part to all-wheel drive, and as the Corvette of choice, the ZR1 couldn’t be left behind.
