This Is How Long Engine Oils Can Be Stored In The Garage

Published

on

Many people keep various things in their garages that they rarely use, and among them, there is often motor oil bought in advance or on sale. However, the question is how long it can last before it becomes unusable…

The shelf life is generally between three and five years, depending on whether it is synthetic, semi-synthetic or mineral oil, as well as the composition of additives. Experts warn that the presence of metals such as iron or copper can accelerate the oxidation process and reduce the quality of the oil.

Also, when you open the oil, it is recommended to use it within six months (from opening). You should store the oil in a room protected from sunlight, where the temperature does not go to extremes and is close to room temperature throughout the year. Extreme temperatures will affect the oil’s ability to effectively lubricate the vehicle’s engine. Too low temperatures can affect the formation of sediments in the oil.

It is not wise to use an already opened bottle of oil that has been open for more than half a year. In contact with moisture or dust, the oil can develop sediments, i.e., particles that cannot be dissolved. Before using the oil, it would be good to check its texture and color, which should be the same as when you opened the plastic bottle and poured it into the engine.
