Toyota Shift Production Of The Tacoma From Mexico To The US

Toyota is shifting Tacoma production back from Mexico to San Antonio, Texas, with a $3.6 billion investment to expand its US manufacturing hub by 2030.
The Japanese automaker is moving Tacoma production from Mexico to San Antonio, Texas, by 2030. The company is investing $3.6 billion in the plant, which will add a second assembly line, create 2,000 jobs, and increase annual production capacity by 150,000 vehicles.
The transition will not occur overnight; Toyota plans to phase out Tacoma production in Mexico over the next four years to ensure a seamless supply chain integration.
Toyota maintains that this substantial investment aligns with its strategy to bolster local manufacturing and enhance operational agility, reflecting the company’s “multi-pathway” approach. This initiative is also consistent with Toyota’s “best-company-in-town” philosophy, which emphasizes reinvesting in the communities where its vehicles are manufactured.
The Tacoma remains a flagship model for Toyota in North America, a position supported by strong sales performance. In June 2026, Tacoma deliveries increased by 3.4% to 23,158 units. During the first half of the year, Toyota sold 143,848 Tacomas, representing a 9.9% increase compared to the previous year.
Notably, the Tacoma continues to outsell the full-size Tundra, which recorded 74,368 sales in the first half of 2026. This performance reinforces the Tacoma’s status as a primary driver of Toyota’s commercial success.
This strategic shift underscores the increasing importance of the United States within Toyota’s global operations. In recent years, the company has expanded its export of American-manufactured vehicles to Japan, including models such as the Indiana-produced Highlander. Relocating Tacoma production to Texas is a logical progression of this broader global manufacturing strategy.
