Toyota To Help BMW Launch Its First-ever Series Production Hydrogen-powered Cars In 2028
BMW has announced plans to launch its first-ever series production Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV) in 2028.
The next-gen powertrain system for the FCEV passenger vehicles will be jointly developed by the BMW and the Toyota.
It follows the successfully testing of the BMW iX5 Hydrogen pilot fleet powered by fuel-cell-electric system supplied by Toyota.
The upcoming BMW FCEV series production models will be integrated into the existing portfolio.
BMW has announced plans to launch its first-ever series production Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV) in 2028, following the successfully worldwide testing of the BMW iX5 Hydrogen pilot fleet powered by fuel-cell-electric system supplied by Toyota.
The next-gen powertrain system for FCEV passenger vehicles will be jointly developed by the BMW and the Toyota after both companies signed a new agreement to strengthen collaboration in the hydrogen sector.

“This is a milestone in automotive history: the first-ever series production fuel cell vehicle to be offered by a global premium manufacturer,” said Oliver Zipse, BMW CEO.
“Powered by hydrogen and driven by the spirit of our cooperation, it will underscore how technological progress is shaping future mobility. And it will herald an era of significant demand for fuel cell electric vehicles.”
Also speaking on the new partnership, Koji Sato, President of Toyota Motor Corporation, said :
“We are pleased that the collaboration between BMW and Toyota has entered a new stage. We will accelerate our efforts together with BMW and partners across various industries to realize a future where hydrogen energy supports society.”
The upcoming FCEV series production models will be integrated into the existing portfolio, allowing BMW to offer an existing model in addition to the hydrogen fuel cell drive system variant.
