Traffic Offender Who Assaulted FRSC Personnel Gets 2 Months Imprisonment, Also To Pay ₦300k Compensation

An Asokoro Magistrate Court in Abuja has sentenced a traffic offender, one Nasiru Usman, for assaulting personnel of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) while they were performing their statutory responsibilities.

Delivering judgment on Thursday June 11th 2026, His Worship Oniyangi sentenced Usman to two (2) months imprisonment and further ordered him to pay the sum of Three Hundred Thousand (₦300,000) as compensation to the assaulted FRSC marshals.

The sentencing followed a violent incident on June 9 2026 while Usman, who had been apprehended for dangerous driving, attacked officers while attempting to forcefully remove his impounded truck from the FRSC facility.

“The conviction stemmed from an incident that occurred on 9 June 2026 at Dutse Alhaji, Abuja, where the defendant, who had been arrested for the traffic offences of Failure to Cover Unstable Materials and Dangerous Driving, violently resisted lawful enforcement procedures,” a statement by FRSC read in part.

“Investigations revealed that the offender attempted to forcefully remove his impounded truck from the FRSC impoundment facility and, in the process, launched a violent attack on officers on duty. Armed with a stone, he assaulted two Marshals, causing injuries that necessitated immediate medical attention.”

Reacting to the judgment, the Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, commended the Judiciary for its prompt dispensation of justice. He described the judgment as a clear affirmation that attacks on public officers carrying out lawful duties constitute serious offences against the State and will be met with the full weight of the law.

FRSC boss reiterated that while the Corps remains committed to professionalism, civility, and respect for human rights in all enforcement operations, it will not tolerate any form of violence, intimidation, obstruction, or assault against its personnel.

The Corps Marshal further warned motorists and members of the public against taking the law into their own hands, stressing that grievances arising from enforcement activities should be pursued through established legal and administrative channels rather than through acts of aggression.
