What To Do Before Reversing Your Car
One thing you can’t avoid while driving is reversing your car. You won’t be able to drive forward indefinitely; you’ll have to reverse at some point.
The manner in which you reverse your vehicle is critical to your safety and the safety of other road users. When you reverse your car incorrectly, you may end up endangering your own life as well as the lives of other road users.
Here are some things to keep in mind before or after you reverse.
- Check to see if there are any pedestrians, especially children, physically challenged people, or physical obstructions on the road behind you. Perform a 360-degree check of your surroundings. If you’re going to drive in reverse, don’t forget to look behind and under your car before getting inside.
- Be especially cautious of the “blind area” behind you, which is the portion of the road that you cannot see from the driver’s seat, either through the mirror or by looking backwards.
- Always adjust your side mirrors when necessary, especially if you need to see the ground. Some vehicles are programmed to adjust the mirrors automatically when the reverse gear is engaged.
- Do not reverse if you are unable to see clearly behind you. When reversing, have someone assist you. Otherwise, don’t, so you don’t have to stop after hearing a loud bang.
- Never back up from a side road onto a major road. Reversing from a street road into a major road is a good example. You might not be fortunate enough to avoid being hit by an oncoming vehicle.
- Always turn off your headlights when reversing at night, according to the Nigeria Highway Code.
7. According to the Nigeria Highway Code, when reversing at night, always turn off your headlight and make sure your reverse light is turned on. You may activate your HAZARD lights.
8. It is recommended that you reverse as slowly as possible while using your mirrors, rear view camera, and checking all around you (unless you are fleeing from danger, do not move too fast as if you are doing a Formula 1 race in reverse).
9. Do not reverse your vehicle any further than necessary to avoid becoming one of those people who will not stop reversing until they hit the curb or enter the gutter.
10. Do not rely solely on your car’s reverse camera.
You should try as much as you can to put into practice everything you should keep in mind before or when reversing. We care about your safety and the safety of other road users.
