Workers At Mercedes-Benz Demonstrate Against Layoffs And Job Losses
Thousands of Mercedes-Benz employees are protesting on Friday against the planned cutbacks at the German car manufacturer, under which staff will have to work longer for the same salary, among other measures. Demonstrations are also being held against the massive job losses across the entire German automotive industry. Trade union IG Metall has warned of a “hot summer” of industrial action in the automotive sector.
A one-off bonus for Mercedes-Benz staff has also been postponed, and certain activities are being moved abroad, as was announced last month. Employees are now taking action at company locations in Sindelfingen and Untertürkheim near Stuttgart, as well as in Rastatt, Kuppenheim, Bremen, Berlin, Hamburg, and Germersheim.
Furthermore, IG Metall is organizing a meeting in Düsseldorf where Chairwoman Christiane Benner will give a speech. Tens of thousands of jobs have been lost in the German automotive industry due to difficult market conditions.
“IG Metall and the employees at manufacturers and suppliers will give the bosses of the automotive industry a hot summer and autumn as long as they continue to rely on layoffs and relocation instead of looking for real solutions,” the union said. IG Metall says that if nothing is done about this, they will continue to do so. “But they forget one thing: employees are not responsible for the crisis.”
German car manufacturers, including Volkswagen and BMW, are struggling with weaker demand and high costs for energy, among other things. Just last month, BMW announced it plans to cut thousands of jobs this year.
