Fatal Tesla Semi Collision in Nevada Results in Two Deaths
A Tesla Semi was involved in a fatal collision in Dayton, Nevada, this past Sunday, resulting in two fatalities and leaving one individual with life-threatening injuries. This incident marks what is believed to be the first documented fatal crash involving the fully electric truck. While the Nevada State Police are conducting a formal investigation, preliminary reports from the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office suggest that driver fatigue may have been a contributing factor.
The accident occurred on US 50 when the Tesla Semi struck two stationary vehicles, including a classic Volkswagen Beetle, that were waiting at a red traffic signal. The force of the collision proved fatal for a married couple in one of the vehicles, while a third person was airlifted to a local hospital in critical condition. Authorities temporarily closed both directions of US 50 to facilitate debris removal and onsite investigation.
Although the Tesla Semi is equipped with advanced safety features, such as autonomous emergency braking, the vehicle is not configured with the company’s “Full Self-Driving” system. The identities of the truck operator and the victims have not been released at this time.
The Nevada State Police are currently investigating the incident. Preliminary statements obtained at the scene by deputies from the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office suggest that the driver may have fallen asleep, though this remains unconfirmed by official investigators.
While the Tesla Semi is not equipped with the company’s Full Self-Driving system, it does include advanced safety features such as autonomous emergency braking, which is designed to assist in critical situations.
The vehicle is manufactured at Gigafactory Nevada, located approximately one hour from the site of the collision. At this time, the identities of the driver and the operator of the semi-truck have not been disclosed.
