The incoming 2023 Genesis GV60 all-electric Crossover SUV will arrive in the market next year with plethora of security features that experts say it will help tackle recent spike in motor thefts.
The GV60 electric Crossover will arrive with an industry first facial recognition technology dubbed a ‘Face Connect’, which scans owners face to open and close their car doors without using keyfob.
Located on the B-pillar, the ‘Face Connect’, a biometric face-scanning system, features a Near Infra-Red (NIR) camera designed to work in all lighting conditions, including at night and in stormy weather.
Upon recognizing owners face, Genesis says that ‘Face Connect’ will also be able to apply settings like the seating position, steering wheel height, side mirror positioning and infotainment settings.
In addition, the 2023 Genesis GV60 will also debut with a new fingerprint authentication system – fingerprint-scanner ‘Start’ button – that allows drivers to start the vehicle using a biometric scanner.
But Genesis, the Hyundai luxury division, notes that drivers not comfortable with the tech can opt not to use the features if they would prefer to stick with a conventional key instead.
Genesis says all information powering these features is “stored securely via encrypted software in the vehicle and managed via HMI (Human-Machine Interface),” adding that “at no point is biometric data uploaded and stored remotely,” defusing concerns about the systems being hacked by criminals.
It adds:
“The never-seen-before combination of face and fingerprint recognition allows customers to have a completely hassle-free experience, giving users the option to leave their car keys behind should they wish.”
Lawrence Hamilton, managing director for Genesis Motor Europe, commented:
“We are delighted to introduce the world’s first biometric experience on a car with the 2023 new model year changes for GV60, one of our most exciting models in Europe.”
“Already featuring state-of-the-art elements, the new additions represent a further step towards innovation by introducing a never-seen-before advanced technology in the market whilst also proving Genesis’ commitment to offer a personalised and seamless experience to customers.”
The GV60 will also feature a wireless inductive charging like in the 2019 BMW 530e PHEV. The wireless charger takes GV60’s batteries to full in six hours, which is four hours faster than using a wall charger.
The new 2023 Genesis GV60 costs from $59,290 for the 314-hp Advanced and $68,985 for the 429-hp Performance Trims, both with dual-motor, all-wheel-drive powertrains and a 77.4-kWh battery.
Estimated driving range varies from 235-miles for the sportier Performance model to 248-miles for the Advanced model per charge.
