Tesla Model S Sets Record, Becomes First EV To Go Above 400 Miles

Tesla Model S becomes the first-ever electric vehicle to receive EPA range rating above 400 miles!

The EPA rated the Model S Long Range Plus at 402 miles of range after Tesla made some judicious changes to the EV.

What this means is that the current version of the car’s Long-Range Plus can travel nearly 20 per cent farther than the 2019 version.

Starting today, all North American Model S Long Range Plus vehicles have an official EPA-rated range of 402 miles, representing a nearly 20% increase in range when compared to a 2019 Model S 100D with the same battery pack design.

Tesla says it was able to accomplish this feat thanks to mass reduction, updated regenerative braking, and a wheel/tyre combination that reduces drag and rolling resistance.

Tesla has mostly been focused on the Model 3 and Model Y. However, it has also been making updates to the Model S line. This is to give the sedan the ability to go nearly 20 per cent farther than the same version from the 2019 model year.

The company says it achieved this with a combination of mass reduction, new wheels, drive unit efficiency, and updated regenerative braking.

According to Tesla, it has taken what it learned building the Model 3 and the Model Y and applied that to the Model S.

The Elon Musk-run company also said it has been able to reduce the weight of the vehicle. This was achieved through the use of a standardized seat, some clever design and manufacturing. And also by using lighter materials in the battery packs and driver units.

The rear AC-drive unit now has an electric oil pump instead of a mechanical one, to optimize lubrication and reduce friction. Plus, the company has improved the gearbox of the front permanent-magnet synchronous reluctance motors.

In a tweet, Elon Musk, Tesla’s CEO, said that All Model S cars made since late  Jan have 402-mile range. This is just making it official.
