Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed personally drove visiting Nigeria President Muhammadu Buhari to a dinner.

The joy ride comes ahead of Monday’s inaugural ceremony of Abiy Ahmed as the Prime Minister for another five-year term.

Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari arrived Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, on Sunday, ahead of Monday’s inaugural ceremony of Abiy Ahmed as the Prime Minister for another five-year term.

On arrival, President Muhammadu Buhari, who was met by Abiy as he disembarked from the plane, was later accorded a full guard of honour by the Ethiopian National Defence Force.

After the inspection of the guard of honour, the Prime Minister ushered the President into a waiting SUV, after which he went behind the wheels to drive Buhari to the newly built expansive friendship park for a private dinner.

A trendy picture of the joy ride was posted on the social media pages, showing Abiy on the wheels of an SUV, while Muhammadu Buhari sat on the passenger side.

President Buhari will join other African leaders, including the Presidents of Djibouti, Kenya, South Sudan, Senegal, Somalia, Uganda and the Prime Minister of the Democratic Republic of Congo, at the inauguration ceremony on Monday.

Speaking on the significance of President Buhari’s visit to the country, the Ambassador of Nigeria to Ethiopia and Permanent Representative to the African Union, Victor Adeleke, praised the cordial relations between Nigeria and Ethiopia.

He said :

‘‘Nigeria and Ethiopia enjoy warm cordial relations, they are equally the two largest democracies in Africa, in this wise, the attendance of President Buhari at the inauguration ceremony of Prime Minister Ahmed is an indication of the President’s commitment to strengthening democracy in Africa.’’
