Arik Air Aircraft Burgled At MMIA, Flight Management System Worth ₦125 Million Stolen From It

Thieves steals Flight Management System (FMS) worth $300,000 (₦125 Million) from Arik Air Aircraft at MMIA.

FMS is a specialized computer system that automates a wide variety of in-flight tasks.

The burgled Boeing 737-73V aircraft was reportedly leased from Eznis Airways LLC, an airline based in Mongolia.

The security breach happened at the domestic terminal 2 of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport Lagos.

A Boeing 737-73V belonging to Arik Air has reportedly been burgled and its Flight Management System stolen at the domestic terminal 2 of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport Lagos.

The stolen Flight Management System (FMS) is a specialized computer system that automates a wide variety of in-flight tasks. It reduces the workload on the flight crew to the point that modern civilian aircraft no longer carry flight engineers or navigators.

The theft, which took place in the late hours of Wednesday 19 to the early hours of Thursday 20, led to flights cancellations and postponement, according to a source at the airline.

“The aircraft was parked inside the tarmac at MM2 and someone got access to the electorical electronic base where we have all the systems.

“There is a door underneath the aircraft where they opened and got access to remove the FMC and that was why we had obstruction in our operations that day.

“It is expected that the CCTV should be on and capture whoever did it but we haven’t heard anything to that effect. That equipment that was stolen is a small but it cost a lot of money. To repair it cost about $15,000 and a brand new one cost about $300,000 as at 2021.

“Every item in an aeroplane has serial numbers and can be tracked anywhere in the world, so i don’t know how the thief intends selling it unless the person has a vendor. That is why we believe it is internal sabotage,”

The burgled aircraft, with registration number EI-ULN, was reportedly leased from Eznis Airways LLC, an airline based in Mongolia.
