US-bound Cargo Ship Loaded With VW And Porsche Vehicles Catches Fire
US-bound Cargo Ship loaded with Volkswagen and Porsche vehicles burst into flames in the Atlantic Ocean.
22 crew members were rescued from a large cargo Ship, Felicity Ace, by the Portugal’s navy and Airforce.
The massive ship was sailing from Emden in Germany to the port of Davisville in the U.S. state of Rhode Island.
The exact number of vehicles Felicity Ace was hauling to North America at the time it caught fire is unknown.
But the 200-meter-long (650-feet-long) Cargo ship is capable of carrying nearly 4,000 cars.
Portugal’s navy and Airforce has deployed its boats and aircraft to rescue a 22 crew members from a large cargo Ship, MV Felicity Ace, that caught fire near the mid-Atlantic Azores Islands.
The car carrier, reportedly loaded with Volkswagen Auto Group brand’s cars, including Porsche vehicles, sounded the alarm after a fire broke out in the hold.
The 17-year-old cargo ship was sailing from Emden in Germany to the port of Davisville in the U.S. state of Rhode Island, according to online vessel trackers.
Portugal’s navy said one of its patrol boats and four merchant vessels helped with the rescue. A Portuguese Air Force aircraft was also mobilized during the mission.
The exact number of vehicles Felicity Ace was hauling to North America at the time it caught fire is unknown, but the 200-meter-long (650-feet-long) ship is capable of carrying nearly 4,000 cars.
A Motoring YouTuber Matt Farah, who took to Twitter, said his Porsche Boxster 718 Spyder is one of thousands of vehicles trapped on the burning ship.
“I just got the call from my dealer. My car is now adrift, possibly on fire, in the middle of the ocean,”. He said that the sports car had been ordered as far back as August last year.
A spokesperson for Lamborghini told Car and Driver that the company is “aware of an incident involving a third-party cargo ship transporting Volkswagen Group vehicles across the Atlantic. The vessel was on its way to North America.
At this time, we are not aware of any injuries. We are in contact with the shipping company to get more information about the incident”.
