Mercedes-Benz S-Class, Official Car Of Shehu Shagari, Nigeria’s President From 1979 To 1983
A Mercedes-Benz S-Class sedan, the official car of President of Nigeria’s Second Republic, Shehu Shagari.
His first official car was a Peugeot 504, the same car used by Nigeria’s Head-of-State, General Olusegun Obasanjo.
Shagari will later dump the Peugeot 504 sedan for a more a Mercedes-Benz S-Class luxury sedan.
Mercedes W126 is the second generation Mercedes-Benz S-Class series, premiering in 1979 and produced through 1991.
Shagari was the only president of Nigeria’s Second Republic, which lasted from 1979 to 1983.

When he assumed office in 1979, his official car was a Peugeot 504, the same car used by General Olusegun Obasanjo as Nigeria’s Head-of-State in 1979.
Shehu Shagari will later dump the Peugeot 504 sedan for a more befitting official State Car – a Mercedes-Benz S-Class (W126) luxury sedan.
The Mercedes-Benz W126 is the second generation Mercedes-Benz S-Class series, premiering in 1979 for the 1980 model year and produced through 1991.
Shagari ran for a second four-year term in 1983 and won the general election, before his government was overthrown in a military coup on 31 December 1983 led by then-General Muhammadu Buhari.
According to reports, General Buhari used a Volkswagen Santana as his official car. But he also used the 2nd-gen Mercedes-Benz W126 S Class he inherited from Shagari for special occasions
Former President Shehu Shagari, born on 25 February 1925, passed away on December 28, 2018, in Abuja, at the ripe age of ninety-three.
