1937 Mercedes 540K Formerly Owned By King Of Afghanistan Wins ‘Best of Show’ At Pebble Beach

1937 Mercedes-Benz 540K Special Roadster formerly owned by King Of Afghanistan wins ‘Best of Show’ at Pebble Beach.

Current owner, Jim Patterson acquired it for $9.9 million during last year’s 2022 edition of the Monterey Car Week.

Its victory makes it the 10th time a Mercedes car will win the prestigious award that has been won most by a Bugatti car.

A pre-war 1937 Mercedes-Benz 540K Special Roadster won the coveted title of ‘Best of Show’ at the 72nd Pebble Beach Concourse d’Elegance, a week-long car event in Monterey, California, which wrapped up on Sunday.

This 540K Special Roadster was originally delivered to the the King of Afghanistan, Mohammed Zahir Shah, in September 1937, who used it until he gifted the classic car to his son-in-law in the UK in 1950.

The current owner, Jim Patterson, known for his comprehensive collection of classic cars, acquired the Mercedes-Benz 540K Special Roadster for $9.9 million during last year’s 2022 Edition of the Monterey Car Week.

The 1937 Mercedes-Benz 540K Special Roadster’s victory at the event makes it the 10th time a Mercedes-Benz car will win the prestigious award that has been won most by a Bugatti car since 1950.

But this isn’t the first time Jim Patterson’s classic cars will walk away with the coveted title of ‘Best of Show’ at Pebble Beach as his Delage D8 S de Villars Roadster won the title in 2010 while his Isotta Fraschini Tipo 8A Worblaufen Cabriolet won it in 2015.

“The 540 K Special Roadster winning the ‘Best of Showʼ title at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance crowns the immense commitment of RM Auto Restoration and Mercedes-Benz Heritage to the restoration of this outstanding vehicle,” Mercedes-Benz Heritage boss Marcus Breitschwerdt said after the win.

“We are proud to have contributed to this success story with the unique expertise of our Classic Center and the archives. The intensive and good cooperation with RM Auto Restoration during the past months has made this success possible.”
