To Reduce Cost, LAMATA Urges Swedish Bus Maker, Scania, To Set Up Manufacturing Plant In Lagos

The Managing Director of Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), Engr. Mrs. Abimbola Akinajo, has urged Scania AB to set up manufacturing plant in Lagos to reduce the huge cost of procuring high-capacity buses for passenger operations.
According to LAMATA boss, the Volkswagen Group-owned Swedish bus manufacturer needs to expand its partnership with Lagos beyond bus sales by exploring capacity building and knowledge transfer.
Akinajo made the admonition during the visit of a delegation from the Swedish Honorary Consulate to LAMATA to discuss and collaborate on sustainable transportation initiatives.

The meeting aimed to explore the next steps following the completion of alternative fuel studies and the implementation roadmap in Lagos and ways the Swedish community can contribute to the city’s development.
The delegation to LAMATA included Antonia Adenaya, the Regional Director for North and West Africa, Philip Akeson, the Honorary Consul of Sweeden in Lagos and Sarah Ibru, who represented the ambassador of Sweden to Nigeria.
Others are representatives from Swedefund, Scania, the International Council for Swedish Industries, the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA), Business Sweden, and the Swedish Embassy.
Expressing gratitude for their ongoing support and partnership, Akinajo recalled the fruitful study tour to Sweden with representatives from the Ministry of Environment and Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) to understudy the biofuel sector in Sweeden.
During the visit, Antonia Adenaya commended the government for forming a steering committee to drive the biogas initiative. She reiterated the need to take concrete steps, indicating potential interests and collaboration from Swedish firms.
