Record Numbers Of Tesla Owners Are Trading In Their Cars For Rival Brands

Tesla owners are feeling the wrath of many over the political transformation of the company’s founder and CEO, Elon Musk, and it seems that many of them have had enough. New data shows a rise in trade-in sales or the exchange of Tesla cars for vehicles from other brands.
Reuters reports that Tesla cars from the 2017 model year later accounted for 1.4 percent of all vehicles sold through March 15, which is a 0.4 percent increase from last year and is definitely significant.
CNBC reports that this is a record level of Tesla car swaps for vehicles from other brands, and there are likely several reasons for this, including new competitors in the market.
However, there is no doubt that Musk’s close connection to US President Donald Trump and his status as the de facto head of the Department of Government Efficiency play a role in this.
“There comes a time when you have to decide who you’re going to side with,” said American singer Sheryl Crow, who got rid of her Tesla car.
Attacks on Tesla showrooms have been in the headlines, and US Attorney Pamela Bondi recently said that “those who join the wave of domestic terrorism against Tesla property will end up behind bars.”
However, Tesla owners have also been the target of hate. Many have reported being subjected to swearing and inappropriate gestures, but there have also been more serious cases of vandalism, from scratching vehicles to setting them on fire.
Regardless of what’s behind Tesla’s decision, this situation could create an opportunity for other electric vehicle manufacturers and startups to enter the market. Those who turn their backs on Tesla and Musk could replace their cars with models from other brands.
