Several Waymo self-driving taxis stopped working during a massive power outage in San Francisco over the weekend, which left over 130,000 homes and businesses without power for over 48 hours.

During the outage, traffic lights were out and several self-driving taxis operated by Waymo stopped in the middle of intersections, forcing motorists to swerve around the stopped taxis as traffic jams grew.

“The damage from the fire in our substation was significant and extensive, and the repairs and safe restoration will be complex,” utility provider, Pacific Gas and Electric Co. (PG&E) said while explaining the cause of the power outage.

Following the outage on December 20th, Waymo — formerly known as the Google Self-Driving Car Project — paused all services in the San Francisco Bay Area, though it has since resumed its operations, a spokesperson said in a statement.
