Americans Are Upset That Their Large Pickup Trucks Will Not Be Imported Into Europe
The European Commission is working on changes to the rules, and American automakers believe it will prevent the sale of their pickups in Europe.
US automakers have spoken out against an overhaul of Europe’s individual vehicle approval system, which could ban large pickups like the Ford F-150, Chevrolet Silverado and Ram 1500.
American manufacturers argue that the change would violate the terms of the trade agreement between the US and the EU. The Financial Times reports that the EU and the US agreed on a trade agreement in 2025, where President Donald Trump revised European import tariffs from 27.5% to 15%. The EU, meanwhile, agreed to reduce tariffs on imports of American vehicles.
Now, however, the EU plans to ban large American pickups for safety reasons. They are currently imported under the individual vehicle approval system, which allows the import of vehicles adapted to other markets. The European Commission is working on changes to the rules, which US automakers believe will prevent their pickups from being sold in Europe, a move that would allegedly be in violation of the 2025 US-EU trade deal.
According to the environmental group Transport & Environment, US manufacturers will sell around 7,000 SUVs and pickups in Europe in 2024. Transport & Environment opposes the importation of American pick-ups because they allegedly pose a greater risk to cyclists, pedestrians and other vehicles on the road. Engine hoods are so high that the average driver cannot see children under the age of nine standing directly in front of the vehicle.
