Mercedes And Audi Lose To BMW In The JD Power Initial Quality Study

The JD Power 2026 U.S. Initial Quality Study (IQS) reports problems in new vehicles during the first 90 days of ownership. This highlights early quality issues when buyers expect flawless cars. Porsche was the top-rated brand, while BMW led with six category wins. The results show BMW’s reliability has improved over the past years, surpassing Audi and Mercedes-Benz.
The 40th annual Initial Quality Study (IQS) surveys 78,514 owners of 2026 models. Feedback covers ten key areas—including infotainment, features, exterior, and powertrain—plus data from repair visits.
Porsche led the 2026 J.D. Power Initial Quality Study with 138 PP100, while the industry averaged 175 PP100. Despite ranking 12th overall (178 PP100), BMW earned the most category wins, with these models leading their segments:
- BMW 2 Series (Small Premium Car)
- BMW 5 Series (Upper Midsize Premium Car)
- BMW 8 Series (Large Premium Car)
- BMW X1 and X2 (Small Premium SUV – tied)
- BMW X6 (Upper Midsize Premium SUV)
- BMW X7 (Large Premium SUV)
Another BMW, the 4 Series, was a runner-up in the compact premium car segment, capping a very strong showing for the brand.
BMW’s recent reliability gains mark a shift from its past mechanical issues. Outperforming Audi and Mercedes-Benz in the latest J.D. Power study, BMW now leads its rivals thanks to robust engines like the B58 and improved software. While owning a German car still requires caution outside the warranty, BMW’s consistent performance suggests it has become a dependable choice for initial ownership.
