EVs Are Beaten By Hybrid SUVs In KBB’s 2026 Shopper Data
Hybrid SUVs are dominating the 2026 market, with Kelley Blue Book data showing shoppers prefer them over EVs two-to-one due to their superior affordability, convenience, and popularity.
Non-luxury SUV interest has hit a record 71%, while sedan popularity continues to drop. As affordability remains key in 2026, buyers are increasingly choosing hybrids over EVs for their better price, fuel efficiency, and daily convenience.
Hybrid SUVs Take The Lead
The Kelley Blue Book Brand Watch survey for H1 2026 shows hybrid consideration at 22% compared to 10% for EVs. Meanwhile, non-luxury SUV interest reached a record 71% as sedans fell to 25%. Models like the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V lead the segment, with Toyota’s dominance in the electrified category highlighting the strong link between hybrid popularity and SUV demand.
Honda’s strong showing in nine of 12 decision drivers in the survey, including affordability and reliability, also explains why hybrids are having a moment in 2026. If you look at specific lineups, brands like Hyundai have posted record US results in part because their hybrid SUV sales are surging, especially on family crossovers that compete directly with EVs on shopper lists.
Why Hybrid SUVs Are Becoming More Popular
Hybrids are currently outpacing EVs because they offer better affordability and avoid the limitations of public charging infrastructure. As cost-conscious buyers prioritize long-term value, the market share for hybrids is rising into the high teens, while EV adoption remains in the single digits. For those without home charging or those who frequently travel long distances, hybrid SUVs provide a practical, fuel-efficient alternative that avoids the lifestyle changes required by full electrification.
Preference for body style remains the decisive factor. Given that the most prominent electrified models are compact or midsize crossovers, consumers typically prioritize the SUV format before choosing between hybrid and electric powertrains. Currently, hybrids are prevailing in this segment because they offer the desired fuel efficiency and cost-effectiveness without requiring significant lifestyle adjustments. This trend is evident not only in the Kelley Blue Book survey but also in the sales performance of manufacturers such as Kia, where robust demand for utility vehicles contrasts with the slower adoption of fully electric models.
