Ford Maverick’s August Sales Record Beats The Hyundai Santa Cruz’s Whole Year Sales

Ford sold 13,680 Mavericks in August, a 14.4% year-over-year increase, while the Hyundai Santa Cruz has sold only 13,191 units year-to-date—a 30% drop. With Ford’s total sales remaining stable, the Maverick’s market dominance is primarily driven by the Santa Cruz’s significant decline.

The significance of this performance gap is underscored by Hyundai’s broader commercial success. Despite a modest two-percent decline in overall year-to-date U.S. sales, the brand has seen a 33-percent increase in hybrid vehicle demand, with both the Tucson and Santa Fe achieving record-breaking figures in August. The Santa Cruz stands as a distinct outlier within an otherwise robust portfolio, rather than an indicator of systemic weakness. Consequently, reports suggest that Hyundai has accelerated the discontinuation timeline for the model—originally slated for the second quarter of 2027—to avoid prolonging the lifecycle of an underperforming product.

While the Santa Cruz offers better refinement and higher towing capacity, the Maverick dominates the segment due to its superior fuel efficiency and lower price point. With a standard hybrid engine delivering an industry-leading 38 mpg, the Maverick outperforms the Santa Cruz, whose most efficient model only achieves 25 mpg, with higher-performance trims priced near $41,000.

Instead of re-engineering the Santa Cruz to compete directly in the segment, reports indicate that Hyundai intends to pivot toward developing a larger, more traditional pickup designed to challenge the Toyota Tacoma. This strategic shift serves as a tacit acknowledgment that attempting to outperform Ford in terms of fuel efficiency and pricing has proven ineffective, suggesting that Hyundai’s optimal path forward lies in introducing a vehicle that moves beyond direct comparison with the Maverick.
