Rolls-Royce Motor Cars has announced the departure of its head of design, Jozef Kaban. Kaban, who designed the Bugatti Veyron became Head of Design at Rolls-Royce in April this year, making his stay one of the shortest in Goodwood.

Rolls-Royce issued a statement confirming his departure:

Jozef Kaban, Head of Design, has decided to leave Rolls-Royce Motor Cars and the BMW Group with immediate effect to pursue other interests.”

Rolls-Royce CEO, Torsten Müller-Ötvös said:

“Although Jozef has been with Rolls-Royce for a very short period we thank him for his input during his tenure. We wish him the best for the future.”

The exceptionally talented designer joined Rolls-Royce Motor Cars from the BMW Group where he has been Head of Design Studio BMW since 2017.

Aged just 20, the now 46 year old Slovakian, who studied car and art design in Bratislava and London, was one of the youngest ever designers to join the Volkswagen Group.

He progressed rapidly, and in 1998 he was awarded project lead for the Bugatti Veyron, where he designed the exterior of the million dollar hypercar.

His success led to a desire to continue broadening his experience in the automotive field, leading to Head of Exterior roles, first at Audi AG and then Skoda Auto.

The Bugatti Veyron Designer, Jozef Kaban, is not the first Head of Design to leave Rolls-Royce in search of greener pastures in recent time. Former Rolls-Royce design boss Giles Taylor is now with Chinese automaker, Hongqi.

Giles Taylor, who spent seven years at Rolls-Royce, recently revealed plans to deliver a million-dollar-plus luxury “Chinese Rolls-Royce” to fight with the world’s best under the new Chinese Hongqi brand.

He says despite the fact that the Chinese love to buy Rolls-Royce cars, the idea of a Chinese Rolls-Royce rival will appeal to growing patriotism in the country.

“We’re picking up young customers with extreme wealth … they want to buy Chinese”

“Even though they love a Rolls-Royce I think there’s now an appetite to buy Chinese luxury”
