Early on Friday, an aging bridge that was listed as being in poor condition collapsed in Pittsburgh, western Pennsylvania, causing several injuries and damaging vehicles that were driving on it.
Officials said the 447 feet long bridge, located on Forbes Avenue in the Pennslyvania city’s Frick Park, came crashing down at around 6:40 a.m.
Luckily, there were no fatalities, but there were 10 minor injuries as a result of the collapse, including three people who were taken to the hospital.
According to Pittsburgh Public Safety, five vehicles and one Port Authority bus were on the bridge at the time of the collapse.
A photo published by KDKA showed at least six vehicles in the rubble of the bridge. Another photo showed a commuter bus on a section of the collapsed bridge.
Pennsylvania Lt. Gov. John Fetterman, who called the bridge collapse surreal during an interview with CNN, said :
“It’s just surreal to see a bridge you’ve driven over countless times go down,”
“Thankfully, schools were on a two-hour delay for weather, so the traffic was less than it would have been normally on a normal day,”
The bridge, which came up in 1970, collapsed hours before US President Joe Biden was previously set to speak in Pittsburgh to discuss his recently passed $1 trillion infrastructure bill, which included $1.6 billion from the federal government to improve Pennsylvania’s bridges.
