According To Toyota, Hydrogen Will Eventually Replace Diesel
In a definitive interview with Australia’s Car Expert, Sean Hanley, the Vice President of Sales, Marketing, and Franchise Operations at Toyota Australia, confidently asserted that hydrogen powertrains are poised to replace diesel within the next few decades.
Hanley says:
– Diesel won’t disappear in the next decade, but after that, I think hydrogen will take over diesel. Ultimately, I can’t imagine diesel being the fuel of the future…
While Hanley acknowledges that people are currently dismissive of hydrogen, the vice-president still believes the technology could eventually replace diesel powertrains. Hanley says the hydrogen refuelling infrastructure in Australia would need to be significantly better, but the right investment could drive the uptake of the technology.
Toyota began developing hydrogen fuel cell vehicles in the 1990s.
BMW launched its next-generation fuel cell system earlier this month, and the company plans to put it into series production in 2028.
Stellantis has the opposite view and has stopped investing in this technology because it believes that developing hydrogen-powered vehicles would put too much strain on the group’s finances for now.
